AN elite Christian college has moved to quell suggestions that a Muslim girl was inspired to convert while attending the school, as police prepared to interview her father over the alleged honour killing of her mother.
Adelaide's non-denominational Pembroke School insisted students were "encouraged to seek their own spiritual journeys".....
Pembroke students said yesterday that the school did not require students to participate in Christian services, and only taught compulsory religious education up to Year 9.
Principal Malcolm Lamb said in a statement that the school had "a philosophy where individuals are encouraged to seek their own spiritual journeys". "In the case of Islamic students, the school is in principle and in practice very supportive of students observing religious customs, such as wearing the hijab - this has happened in the past, observing fasting and the need for prayer rooms," Mr Lamb said.
After all, we wouldn't want to give the impression that "Christian" schools were actually concerned with passing on the Christian faith. But I guess that the Great Commision takes second place to student fees. In any case why pass on 2000 years of Christian tradition when the children's "individual spiritual journeys" are far more important.
However even if the school actually wanted to pass on Christianity, how can a "non-denominational school" actually teach anything about Christianity? How can it teach anything on Baptism, the Church, the works of the Holy Spirit, the Lord's Supper without taking a "denominational" position? Only by avoiding any indepth discussion, and thereby producing a worthless, vague and watered-down Faith.
Personally I'm convinced that nothing this school could have done could have "inspired" anyone to convert to Christianity.
