A last-ditch bid by anti-merger Liberals to scuttle the plan failed last night with the party's powerful state council overwhelmingly voting in favour of proceeding with the convention on July 26-27 to unite the parties.
Their approval was a major rebuff to State Liberal president Mal Brough who had sought to kill off the merger if the Liberals were not assured the presidency of the new party.
